Thin Places
There are moments in life when the world seems to soften around the edges.
A quiet early morning.
The hush of an empty church.
The sudden warmth of light through stained glass.
The pause just before prayer, when the breath settles and something ancient stirs.
These are the moments when the veil draws thin.
For generations, Christians have spoken of these thresholds: the places where God feels near, where the soul remembers its origin, where heaven leans close enough for us to sense its breath. The mystics knew them well. They recognised that spiritual awakening does not always arrive with trumpets and visions—it most often arrives as a stillness, a turning of the heart, a subtle shift in our inner sight.
The world longs for certainty, clarity, explanations, formulas. But grace rarely moves in straight lines. The mystical path is gentler and deeper. It teaches us to notice:
—to notice the shimmer in ordinary moments,
—to notice the inner nudges of the Spirit,
—to notice the hidden companionship of God that threads through each day.
In an age of noise, distraction, and exhaustion, noticing becomes a form of prayer.
The Thin Places Within
Many people speak of Celtic “thin places”—sacred landscapes where earth and heaven feel only a breath apart. But the older Christian teachers knew that the true pilgrimage is inward.
Julian of Norwich travelled no great distances, yet her revelations opened the universe.
Hildegard stayed within the walls of her abbey, and yet her vision encompassed creation.
The desert mothers and fathers withdrew from the cities not to escape life, but to cultivate the inner life where Christ dwells.
“Thin places” are not only geographical.
They are spiritual. They are within us.
They appear whenever we slow down, breathe, and allow ourselves to become receptive again.
Whenever we let go of the armour we wear in the world.
Whenever the heart dares to open.
And often, they appear unexpectedly—God’s small surprises, scattered like breadcrumbs leading us home.
The Invitation
This space—this blog, this quiet corner of the internet—is meant to be a threshold.
A place to pause.
A place to listen.
A place to remember that you are already held in a Presence far larger and more loving than you may realise.
Here we will walk slowly. We will wander in the company of the mystics. We will explore the hidden wisdom that shines beneath Scripture, beneath tradition, beneath the everyday joys and sorrows of life.
And perhaps, in reading and reflecting, you might find that the veil grows thin for you too.
